چکیده

This circuit is probed by two voltmeters as sketched in the righthand figure above. Each voltmeter consists of a resistor R R1, R2 and an ammeter that measures the currents Ii and reports the “voltage” Vmeter,i = IiR. 3 The “positive” leads of the voltmeters are connected to points a and c, such that the directions of currents I1 and I2 are as shown when positive. The paradox is that Vmeter1 does not equal Vmeter2, which is particularly surprising in the case that points a and c are the same, and points b and d are the same. Discuss.

“Nothing as practical as a good theory” Does Lewin’s Maxim still have salience in the applied social sciences?

In the spirit of the theme of ASIST 2015, the influence of Kurt Lewin’s Maxim—“there is nothing as practical as a good theory”—in the applied social sciences (including Information Science) is examined through the lens of Obliteration by Incorporation text analysis. Six hundred ninety three English language scholarly journal articles published between 1945-2013, retrieved through a search of br...

Personal and intellectual influences leading to Lewin’s paradigm of action research

The idea of action research and social change was the last conceptual topic to engage Kurt Lewin’s attention and energy prior to his untimely death in February 1947. In this article we commemorate the 60th anniversary of his 1946 paper ‘Action research and minority problems’. In the present article, eight principles of action research which were extracted from Lewin’s writings are presented and...

Kurt Lewin’s Change Theory in the Field and in the Classroom: Notes Toward a Model of Managed Learning

Few people have had as profound an impact on the theory and practice of social and organizational psychology as Kurt Lewin. Though I never knew him personally, I was fortunate during my graduate school years at Harvard’s Social Relations Department in 1949–1950 to have been exposed to Alex Bavelas and Douglas McGregor who, in my mind, embodied Lewin’s spirit totally. As I try to show in this es...

Physical Proof of the Occurrence of the Braess Paradox in Electrical Circuits

The Braess Paradox is the counterintuitive phenomenon that can occur in a useroptimized network system, such as a transportation network, where adding an additional link to the network increases the cost (travel time) for every user. In electrical circuits, electrons, analogous to drivers in a transportation network, traverse the network so that no electron can unilaterally change its cost (vol...

Models and Music Theory: Reconsidering David Lewin’s Graph of the 3-2 Cohn Cycle

Iconic models are ubiquitous in music theoretical literature. Their purpose is to illustrate and thereby concretize abstract theoretical concepts that would otherwise exist only in the imagination. Despite the prevalence of iconic models, we find few comprehensive analyses of how they serve this purpose and the conceptual mechanisms that relate models to their subjects. This commentary is a cas...
